GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter)

There are generally two types of GFCI’s. One is actually an outlet, which has a test and a reset button and is generally found in exterior outlets, garages, bathrooms, and kitchens. The other form of GFCI is in your breaker panel. The GFCI breaker generally protects outside circuits, which need a GFCI protection because they don’t have an outlet. An example would be pool equipment, while the breakers and outlets will do the same task as they do in different parts of your home.

A GFCI device will trip when they sense that there is a short to ground, by measuring the difference in the currents between the neutral and line of the circuit. They can also prevent electrical shock, especially when water is present.

AFCI (Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter)

The AFCI breakers where adopted by the National Electrical code in 1999 in order to prevent the outbreak of fires. They trip when there is low or high current arcs, which are caused by loose connections or damaged wiring. At Volt Doctors Raleigh we recommend that if your home was built before the year 200, you should check to see if there are arc faults installed in your breaker panel.

The best way to identify them is through the markings on the front, or a trip test button that is usually found on the front side of your breaker. If you don’t have an AFCI breaker at home, you should definitely consider getting it installed today by a licensed electrician. It will ensure that your home and your family are protected by potential fires.
